Laser cutting is a fabrication process that uses a thin, focused, laser beam to cut and etch material into custom designs. Laser cutters can be used to cut and engrave a variety of materials, including wood, acrylic, cardboard, glass, granite, leather, rubber, and foam. Our Bosslaser Laser Cutter can accommodate material of almost any size using removable pass-thru walls, and has a cuting area of approximately 36" x 55."
Table saws consist of a circular blade mounted to an arbor in a base. The blade projects up through a slot in the tabletop and material is fed into the blade to make precise cuts on various types of wood and sheet goods. Table saws are used to perform rip cuts, crosscuts, and dado cuts. Rip cutting, or "ripping" a board, means cutting in the direction of the grain with the assistance of a fence to change the width of a board. Crosscutting means cutting perpendicular to the director of the grain with assistance of a miter guide or sled and provides a clean, precise end cut for changing the length of a board. Dado cutting involves using a specialized stack of blades to cut wide slots or grooves in material.
Miter saws perform crosscuts to segment boards to a desired length, as well as cutting a desired angle on the end of the board. Miter saws are used often in construction since they are efficient in their operation. They can be used to cut boards to their final length, but may be less favorable for fine precise cuts than cross cutting on the table saw for detailed pieces. Miter saws are valuable for the ease of setting up cuts with complex angles since they can be adjusted along 2 axes.
3D printers create physical objects from 3D digital models by extruding material in successive layers in a process known as "additive manufacturing." 3D printers can be used to create prototypes, models, small components, and end-use parts. Maker Playground features three Ultimaker 3D printer models: 2+, 3S, and 5S.
A lathe is a machine for shaping wood or other materials by rotating the material around the horizontal axis while it is worked on by a variety of either fixed or hand tools. Lathes are commonly used to create table legs, spindles, pens, handles for a variety of cookware and tools, and other round objects such as bowls and vases.
